Hello Bloomies 🙂
Please see below a list of supplies you need for each week including your tools and flowers. If you can’t source something let me know and I can give you some more information.
Each week you will bring your own flowers to arrange in class. The costs of this can vary depending on what flowers you choose. Getting your flowers the day before will allow you to get fresher product that will last longer and you won’t have to worry about storing them for longer periods.
You can also bring in artificial flowers or dried flowers if that’s what works better for you.
I have provided some links below which was available at time of writing and some affiliate links, if they are no longer available online or you need more ideas then contact me via Instagram or Facebook
Floral Scissors, Shears
You can get any shears from Bunnings or similar however these are not always comfortable to use for smaller jobs like buttonholes. I prefer floral scissors to shears for most of my work but also have a pair of shears for really woody stems like natives.
Sakagen Hand Creation (Amazon), Saxton Floral Scissors (Bunnings), Darlec Snips (Spotlight) are a few examples.
Wires
For classwork we will be using 22 gauge wires for wiring flowers for bouquets and buttonholes. It’s a middle range wire which will suit most uses without having to have multiple grades of wires handy. Spotlight and Amazon (Bulk)
Tape
Flora Tape – Paper based tape, easier to use but doesn’t feel as nice and doesn’t have the shine appearance (can be a pro and a con). Comes in many colours but green is normally the best option to camouflage with floor stems. Spotlight and Amazon.
Parafilm – Rubber based tape, harder to use at the start but more versatile. Only comes in green and white and is in major shortage right now so you might be able to find some online or I will have some in class.
Thorn Strippers
For removing thorns or foliage from stems. These will save your hands and make cleaning stems much quicker. There is the rubber mat version with prongs that you rub over stems, or the spring loaded tool that you pull down stems. I found this set of both type on Amazon and a set which adds gloves which might help you if you have sensitive hands.
Pins
Clear Diamond pins and pearl pins are the most common pins we use. 40 – 55mm long is best for attaching buttonholes and securing bouquet ribbons without being too long. Here is some pearl head pins from Spotlight, or clear headed pins from Amazon.
Ribbon
25mm Ribbon is best for bouquet handles and wrist corsage bands. a 10-15mm ribbon is best for tying crowns and adding embellishments to corsages and for buttonholes. Hit up Spotlight or any other craft stores for something to match your flower choices, or you can just stick to whites and ivory to match everything. Another option is twine. You can also use lace over a ribbon to add more decor.
We will be making a single buttonhole and a single lapel corsage this week.
You will need:
1 x Single Rose or Carnation
1 x spray rose or spray carnation (with 5 flower heads)
1 x filler flower such as Gyp, Misty, Statice
1 x Foliage stems suitable for a buttonhole such as Ruscus, Camelia or a hardy leaf that you source form gardens nearby. (we will need at least 6 individual leaves)
TOOLS – Scissors, Pins, Wire, Tape ( I will have all tools and supplies for you to use for the first class)
We will me making a mini flower girl posy to practice out bouquet holding and then pulling it apart and making a flower crown with the same stems.
You will need:
5 x stems of spray flowers, such as spray roses, spray carnations, daisies, statice. You need around 20-25 small blooms total between those stems.
1 stem of filler such as Gyp or Misty.
optional 1 x stem of Italian Ruscus or other small hardy leaves.
TOOLS – Scissors, Wire, Tape, Thin Ribbon
We will me making a bridal bouquet. This is the most expensive class and you might want to use some silk flowers to help bring the costs down.
You will need:
20 – 25 stems of flowers, fillers and foliage.
It is up to you what you bring but some easy flowers to work with are: Roses, Spray Roses, Carnations, Disbuds, Stocks, Snaps, Gyp (Babies Breath), Daisies, Statice, Ruscus, Blue Gum.
Some difficult flowers to work with: Lilies, Gerberas, Dahlias, Sunflowers. This is because of the way the flowers face or the stem type.
NOTE – We will discuss this in class the week before, if you have a photo that you would like to attempt please send it to me and I can tell you what flowers are in it.
TOOLS – Scissors, Strippers, Pins, Wire, Tape, Thick Ribbon
We will be making something that you want to learn. Start thinking about this from week 1. It might be a table centre, or an arbour piece or signing table arrangement.
NOTE – We will discuss this in class right from week 1 so that you have time to think about your choice item. If you have a photo that you would like to attempt please send it to me and I can tell you what flowers and supplies are needed. Costs will vary depending on what you want to make.
